The long-awaited '2009' club knockout final. White gains a big advantage during the early middle game but Black keeps fighting and could have won. The interesting part comes near the end during a time scramble. See the position after move 33.
1. Nf3 Nf6 2. b3 g6 3. Bb2 Bg7 4. e3 b6 5. Ne5 O-O 6. f4 d6 7. Qf3 d5 8. Bd3 Bb7 9. O-O Qc8 10. Qg3 e6 11. Qh4 Qd8 12. Nc3 Nbd7 13. Nb5 a6 14. Nxd7 Qxd7 14... Nxd7 was better as after the Qs and bishops are exchanged, the P on c7 cannot be taken: 15. Qxd8 Rfxd8 16. Bxg7 Kxg7 17. Nxc7? Ra7!
15. Nxc7 Qxc7 16. Bxf6 Qc6 17. Rae1 d4 18. e4 e5 White is now in time trouble. From memory about 6 minutes left with 37 on Maureen's clock. Both sides have used the same amount of time, but Black started with more due to the handicap system.
19. fxe5 Rae8 20. Rf3 Bxf6? 21. exf6 Re6 22. Bc4? 22. e5 wins quickly as the Q and Bishop combine to quickly finish it off e.g. 22... h5 23. Qg5 Kh7 24. Qxh5+ etc.
22... Rfe8 23. Bxe6 Rxe6 24. d3 Qd6 25. Ref1 Qf8 26. Rh3 h5 27. g4 Bxe4 28. dxe4? 28. gxh5 ignoring the bishop was better.
28... Rxe4 29. Rg3 Qc5 30. Rf2 Qe5 30... d3!
31. Kg2 Rf4 32. Rxf4 Qxf4 33. Kh3? White is down to the last 2 and a bit minutes, though Black now has less. This move by White traps the king rather than protecting it.
33... Qf1+ 34. Rg2 Qf3+ I now realised that Maureen had a perpetual check (after Rg3). The only other move leads to mate for Black with best play. However, the game was very overdue and should have been played months ago. With about a minute left on Maureen's clock and about 2 on mine, I decided to risk it and played...
35. Qg3? Qxf6 However, the following would have been forced mate: 35... hxg4+ 36. Kh4 Qxf6+ 37. Kxg4 Qf5+ 38. Kh4 Qh5#
36. gxh5 Qf5+ 37. Qg4 Maureen graciously resigned with her flag about to fall.
