1. e4 Kevin always plays the Vienna if he gets the chance. I don't like that much, so back to the old trusty. 1... d5 2. exd5 Qxd5 3. Nc3 Qa5 4. d4 c6 He's playing really quickly, and he's usually a slow player. I wonder if he's prepared a line against me? How flattering! 5. Nf3 Bg4 6. h3 Bh5 7. g4 Bg6 8. Ne5 Nf6 9. Nc4 Qd8 For the first time he's thinking. If that's his prepared line, it's not too bad. His development is slightly better but not much. 10. Bg2 I need to get my other pieces out. 10... e6 11. h4 This could be awkward. I'd better block it. 11... h5 12. g5 I had planned Ng4 and then if f3, Nh6, but now i see this doesn't work. Rats. I always plan to have two ways of escape though, just in case I miscalculate. 12... Nd5 13. Nxd5 exd5 That's closed his bishop out. I'm a bit behind on development, but not too bad. 14. Ne5 I can't stop him doubling my pawns if he really wants to, but it's not too important. 14... Bd6 15. f4 This looks dangerous, but I think he's overstretching. 15... Nd7 16. Nxg6 fxg6 17. Qd3 Qe7+ His pawns are more advanced, but that's not a real problem. If I can castle queenside I should be ok. 18. Kd1 Obviously I can't allow him to pin my queen. 18... Qf7 19. Re1+ Kd8 20. Qe3 I'm after the f-pawn. If I go Re8, and exchanges, I don't get the pawn. 20... Kc7 21. Qe6 I don't want exchange queens because I then get cramped trying to defend my g-pawn. If I play Qf5 it leads to the same thing after Bh3. Ah! I have it! 21... Rhf8 22. Bh3 This move took a bit of working out, thinking of all his possible replies. 22... Rae8 23. Qxd7+ Qxd7 24. Bxd7 Rxe1+ 25. Kxe1 Kxd7 26. Be3 Bxf4 That all worked out as expected, thank goodness. Now I'm a pawn up, but my extra pawn is doubled. 27. Bf2 Re8+ 28. Kf1 Re4 29. Re1 I don't want to swap rooks yet as it could end up in a draw, and I want to win. 29... Ke6 30. Kg2 Kf5 31. Kf3 I've seen a way of winning another pawn. 31... Bd2 32. Re2 I think he should've played Rd1. I'm considering Rxe2 kxh2, Bxg5 hxg5, Kxg5 but I'm not completely sure it's enough. I think I have another method. 32... Bc1 I reckon I can win the d-pawn by making his king move back. 33. b3 Rxe2 34. Kxe2 Ke4 35. c3 It isn't going to work. Still, I'm in the driving seat. I'll go for his h-pawn now. 35... Bf4 36. Be1 Now for the master-stroke! Best move I've played for ages. Seemingly pointless, but wait and see. 36... Bh2 37. Bf2 Kf4 38. c4 He's seen that the pawn falls, so he's trying to lash out. 38... Bg3 39. Be3+ The move I make is safer than Kg4, becasue the h-pawn still falls and there's no chance of his king getting in. 39... Ke4 40. cxd5 cxd5 41. a4 Bxh4 42. b4 Bg3 43. Bd2 I can't take the d-pawn because of Bc3 picking up my back g-pawn. 43... Bf4 White resigns 0-1
