I got a look at his grade before the game. It's only 91, but I mustn't be overconfident.
1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 Nd4 Bird's variation. He may not have seen it before.
4. Ba4 They usually take the Knight. I wonder what I'm supposed to do now?
4... Nxf3+ 5. Qxf3 Nf6 6. c3 Bc5 7. d3 That was a bit timid. I might be in here.
7... O-O 8. h3 This is starting to look like one of Rob Thomas's games, with all the pawns on the third rank.
8... d5 9. exd5 Qxd5 If he swaps queens, my development is better. If not, I get the initiative.
10. Qxd5 Nxd5 Nf4 looks good, but he'd just take it.
11. Nd2 Now I can do it! I think I win a pawn if I'm careful.
11... Nf4 12. Ne4 If I take the N pawn, I think I lose a piece to Kf1, so it'll have to be QP. If K-d file, Rd8. If Ke2, Nxc1. Yes I think that works.
12... Nxd3+ 13. Ke2 Nxc1+ 14. Raxc1 Bb6 Let's see. I'm a pawn up, and he can't castle. Develop the rest of the pieces and grab the d-file and I should win.
15. Bb3 Bf5 16. Ng3 Bg6 17. h4 h6 18. Bc2 I'm thinking about f5, but I might lose it after rook exchanges on the d-file.
18... Bxc2 19. Rxc2 Rad8 20. f3 Damn! I was going to grab that pawn after rook exchanges.
20... Rd7 21. Rd1 Rfd8 22. Rxd7 Rxd7 23. Rd2 Rxd2+ 24. Kxd2 This is looking good. B better than N in this position, and a pawn up. I think I can grab another one as well.
24... Bf2 25. Nf5 Rats! I was going to play g6 to drive his N away and then get the h pawn, but then my h-pawn drops. I don't like this next move, but can't see a better one.
25... Kh7 26. Ke2 Bb6 27. g4 g6 28. Ne7 The next few apparently aimless moves are to try to drive his N back, so there's no risk to my q-side pawns. That seems to be his only possible threat.
28... Bc5 29. Nd5 c6 30. Nf6+ Kg7 31. Ne4 He might think that's a good sq for his N, but this is a better one for my bishop.
31... Be7 32. h5 gxh5 33. gxh5 f5 34. Nf2 Kf6 35. Nh3 I won't be able to get through that side now, but I can keep his N out of the game.
35... f4 36. Kd3 His King can't get through over there.
36... Kf5 37. c4 Bc5 Although this seems easy now, i'm still worried something could go wrong. I've screwed up much better positions than this! One worry I have is Ng5 hxg5, h6. My K must stay in range.
38. a3 Ke6 39. Ke4 I was going to play Bd4, but then Nxf4 gets his pawn back.
39... Be3 40. b3 a5 41. a4 c5 Zugzwang!
42. Kd3 Kf5 43. Ke2 What else? Surely even I can't mess this up now?
43... e4 44. fxe4+ Kxe4 I'm not worried about the N sac any more because my B can get back.
45. Nf2+ Bxf2 46. Kxf2 f3 47. Kf1 Before he made this move my opponent grinned wryly and picked up his b-pawn and said "Then I have to play that". Then he moved his K back. I wasn't sure if he'd resigned, so I said "Is that your move then?" and he nodded.
47... Ke3 48. Ke1 f2+ 49. Kf1 b6 Now he really did resign.
