Halesowen B v Wolverhampton, 3 February 2004

1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nf6 3. Nxe5 d6 I know this is a very trappy opening, most of the traps being favourable to White. I couldn't find one though. I was tempted to play Nxf7, but didn't. 4. Nf3 Nxe4 5. Qe2 Qe7 6. d3 Nf6 Whoever swaps queens, the opponent develops a piece for nothing. He doesn't look like the sort of bloke who likes to swap queens. 7. Bg5 Qxe2+ Oh well, can't be right all the time. Still my development's better now. 8. Bxe2 Be7 It looks as though he'll castle K-side, so I will develop and go the other way. 9. Nc3 c6 10. Bxf6 In hindsight, maybe Ne4 was better. 10... Bxf6 11. O-O-O Be6 12. Ne4 He can't take a2 because of b3 trapping the bishop. 12... Be7 13. Rhe1 After all the wood's cleared, I may have this open file. 13... a5 Now it's dodgy to play b3, so need to protect a2. 14. Kb1 O-O 15. d4 a4 I can ignore that. It's always better not to be panicked into pawn moves in front of your king. I will carry on with trying to get some sort of attack going on the K-side. 16. Bd3 h6 I was going to play N(e4) to g5, giving a double attack on his h-pawn, and giving me the chance to get rid of the w-squared bishop. He saw my plan unfortunately. Now I can't see any realistic attacking chance, so get some defensive reinforcements. 17. Nc3 a3 Can't take it, because Rxa3, hitting the N, and if that moves, the a-pawn goes. 18. b3 d5 He's threatening Bb4 pinning the N to the Rook, and there's not much I can do about it except move something. I thought about the rook, but e2 seems it's best square, and it takes away a possible escape square for the N. However in hindsight, the move I played was probably not best, but I couldn't see a better alternative. From here on in I'm struggling. 19. Na4 Nd7 Now b5 wins the N, so get rid of his N. 20. Ne5 Nxe5 I have to lose a pawn. If d4xe5, b4 wins a piece I reckon. 21. Rxe5 Bf6 22. Re2 Bxd4 He's still threatening b4 to win the N, but I have a brilliant resource. 23. Bh7+ Kxh7 24. Rxd4 Ra5 I'm still on the back foot, but beginning to feel I have weathered the storm. 25. Rb4 Rb8 This move (my next) isn't good, but I don't class it as a blunder. I just couldn't see anything else. I had a vague idea of getting my K into action as a fighting piece. 26. Kc1 c5 27. Rb6 The next few moves involve the possibility of a series of exchanges on b3, including a bishop sac and then an unstoppable a2. 27... c4 28. Re3 d4 I've also got to watch losing my N, still. 29. Rg3 d3 30. Nc3 dxc2 31. Kxc2 (Ed: Better would have been bxc4, followed by Kxc2. With the knight now defending a2, White would have some chances, although it's still much better for Black) cxb3+ Only seems one way to stop a2. 32. Rxb3 Bxb3+ 33. Kxb3 Rd8 I think I have a saving move. This covers his entry square and threatens the a-pawn. 34. Nb1 Rb5+ 35. Kc2 Rc8+ Looking terminal. 36. Nc3 Rb2+ 37. Kd3 b5 Whatever I do, if he pushes this again, the N has to move, and then my a-pawn falls. White resigns. 0-1
