Fred plays for our club too, so I know him well. In theory I should win, but he's a drawing master. He once gave me a draw when I was two pawns down, but I'm not so soft-hearted.
1. e4 e5 Shall I play the King's Gambit? I've been playng it a lot on the Internet lately, but Fred's very canny. I don't think I'd get much advantage.
2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bc4 Bc5 Should I play the Jerome Gambit? (4 Bxf7ch Kxf7 5 Nxe5ch Nxe5 6 Qh5) Last time I played it, I lost, and I've probably played it against Fred in friendlies. It's only good for shock value, so no.
4. Nc3 Nf6 5. d3 h6 6. Be3 I don't care if he swaps bishops and doubles my pawns. It opens the f-file for me.
6... Bb6 7. Qd2 Now I'm threatening a sac on h6 if he castles. Being canny, he doesn't.
7... d6 8. O-O-O I hope that wasn't premature. I try to wait till he's castled, and then go the other way.
8... Bxe3 9. fxe3 a6 His Q-side pawns could make things awkward. Time to break things open.
10. d4 Bg4 That was a surprise. I think this next sequence wins a pawn by force, but it's a bit deep for me. He might have got out of it.
11. dxe5 dxe5 12. Qxd8+ Rxd8 13. Rxd8+ Kxd8 14. Bxf7 Bxf3 That's a surprise. A pawn down and swapping pieces?
15. gxf3 Rf8 Uh-oh. I've got to be careful now. I can save the bishop, but the backward f-pawn could go.
16. Bg6 Ne7 17. Bf5 Nxf5 18. exf5 I think I've got through it ok.
18... c6 I can't work out the best square for my rook. g1 f1? d1? Also my N is running out of squares.
19. e4 Kc7 I don't want to put my rook on d-file yet (not sure if it's best), so this is chance to get K moving.
20. Kd2 Nh5 21. Ke3 Nf4 I had seen all this. If I can swap Ns, I think it's won.
22. Ne2 Nxe2 23. Kxe2 Kd6 At last I see the best place for my R
24. Rg1 Rf7 25. Rg6+ Rf6 Was that a blunder or was I winning a pawn anyway?
26. Rxg7 b6 I toy with the idea of getting my R to mop up Q side pawns but I don't think it works.
27. h4 a5 I actually have a plan! Rg6, when adequately supported should win
28. h5 b5 29. Rg6 Rxg6 Which pawn to take with? I don't want any chance of his h-pawn being a runner, so....
30. fxg6 Ke6 31. Ke3 c5 Hmm.. I have to watch the Q-side. A few years ago, Fred showed me his patent trick - "the old One-Two". This is a devious method he has of forcing a pawn through when 2 rows of 3 face each other.
32. f4 c4 I think this next move stops his trick
33. b3 cxb3 34. cxb3 exf4+ 35. Kxf4 This must be won now, mustn't it?
35... a4 36. g7 Kf7 I wanted to promote this pawn to a N or something, just for the crack, but I forgot.
37. Kf5 Kxg7 38. Ke6 Kf8 39. Kd7 axb3 40. axb3 Black resigns. He can't stop the e-pawn, and has no threats
