My opponent was most of the way down a pint before we started. He offered me one but I left it till later. Then he made his move and disappeared. It turned out later that there was a football match on the TV in the other room.
1. g3 I want to occupy the centre. I think after this move I may get a chance to play d5 and e4.
1... e5 2. Bg2 My opponent reappeared, played this move and disappeared again so quickly that it was a couple of minutes before I realised he'd moved.
2... d5 3. d3 He's rattling these moves out so quickly that I think it must be a pet opening. He's still disappearing after each move, giving me the chance to see how the rest of the match is going.
3... Nc6 4. Nf3 Nf6 5. O-O I'm not quite sure what he's up to. I'm a bit concerned about e4, but then he blocks his bishop in, so that's ok. Just carry on developing.
5... Bc5 6. Nbd2 I'd like to play e4 soon, but also castle Q side to get the k-side rolling.
6... Be6 7. c4 That's a surprise. The first aggressive move. About this time, Don Currry wandered over to see how I was doing. I said that I though my opponent was on his third pint, so I was just going to complicate things, and he should blunder first.
7... e4 8. Ng5 Attack is the best form of defence.
8... e3 I'm pretty proud of that last move. I expect there's a flaw somewhere (Ed: No there isn't! White's best is to take on e6 and 'just' lose a pawn to exf2+, followed by recapturing the Knight), but I think it gives me an advantage whatever he does. As it happens, he come back and blunders, though I think he's in trouble anyway.
9. fxe3 Bxe3+ 10. Rf2 I could take a free knight, but this seems better.
10... Bxf2+ 11. Kxf2 Ng4+ 12. Kg1 Qxg5 13. cxd5 I look at this (e.g. Bxd5), but then realise I've got a forced win anyway .
13... Qe3+ Black Resigns (Ed: After Kh1 it is forced mate in 5 more moves, the black moves being Nf2+, Nxd1+, Nf2+, Nh3+ and Qg1#).
