Stourbridge v Halesowen B
Dudley League Division 2, 24 March 2004

1. e4 e5 2. Nc3 Bc5 3. f4 I seem to remember the last time I played this I eventually drew by Bxg1, but I want to win this one. 3... exf4 4. Nf3 d6 That was mainly to stop his e-pawn advancing and let my bishop out. Why am I the only player with my back to a red-hot radiator? I play the rest of the game from sideways on. 5. Bc4 I wonder if the Kieseritzky works against the Vienna Gambit? Only one way to find out. 5... g5 6. h4 f6 That was weak. I should have played g4. Now I have to go and move my car. Dave Scriven told me the police would spot that it was on double yellow lines and he lent me the money for the multi-storey car park. Stourbridge players are good guys, it's just their car park which is frustrating. 7. d4 Bb6 8. Nxg5 I haven't got much option but to take it. I judge that his attack doesn't work, so it's ok. 8... fxg5 9. Qh5+ The only move not to lead to immediate defeat is Kd7, and I daren't then go Kc6 because of Bb5 mate, but I'm still confident I can survive. 9... Kd7 10. Qg4+ Ke8 11. Qh5+ Kd7 Drawn by repetition. That's two like that recently. I'm drawing far too many games (two in about two months). Still this one wasn't my fault. Opponent said he didn't think his attack worked, and he didn't want to risk losing if I got my pieces untangled. Perhaps he's scared of me? For my part, I had no option but repeating moves, and I didn't think I would be able to unravel pieces without losing one if he played on, so I was happyish. 1/2-1/2
