BDCL v Westminster Div 4 (Board 3)
Away, 2003

1. Nf3 Oh no. I hate this. I remember I once beat it by playing 1....f5, but I can't remember the rest. I'll try to turn it into an opening I'm more familiar with. 1... Nc6 2. d3 I guess he's planning c4, which will lead to a boring position and I'll probably be outplayed. I'll try to turn it into a king's pawn game. 2... e5 3. e4 Great! Now he's playing a very passive version of positions I know well. 3... Nf6 4. g3 d5 5. Nbd2 d4 That's made his fianchetto pointless, and I've got a pawn in his half of the board. 1-0. 6. Bg2 Bb4 7. O-O Bg4 8. h3 I hoped he'd do that. It's a potential place to sac later on. 8... Be6 9. a3 Bd6 10. Ng5 These RP moves seem feeble to me. If he wants to swap Knights for Bishops that's ok by me. 10... Qd7 11. Nxe6 Qxe6 12. Nc4 O-O-O Castle opposite side to him so I can do a pawn-storm on the k-side. 13. Nxd6+ Rxd6 14. f4 His king's looking exposed now. 14... h5 15. f5 Qe8 16. b4 g6 17. b5 Ne7 18. Bg5 Nh7 His bishop's got to retreat and then I pplay g5. 19. Qc1 f6 20. Bd2 g5 I think this is good. His b-pawn is en prise, but it looks too dangerous to take at the moment. 21. a4 I need to move my knights, to give the rooks more play. 21... Nf8 22. a5 b-pawn en prise again. I'm not making any progress on k-side, so I can take it. If Rb1 then Qa6, and then what does he do? 22... Qxb5 23. Rb1 Qa6 24. Bb4 Didn't see that. Still ok. 24... Rd7 25. Qa3 Rh7 forced 26. Rb2 He's playing this very well. I'm in a bit of a tangle. 26... b5 27. Rfb1 c6 I think I'm ok now, but still have to sort pieces out. 28. Bf1 I'm worried about the disguised pin on my queen. 28... Qb7 29. a6 Qc7 30. Rc1 I'm in trouble. Play a move just to gain time. 30... g4 31. h4 Rf7 This was so my Knight on f8 can go to h7, and I can start to unravel my position. 32. c3 I don't think I can take this. Next move is to allow Nd7. 32... Rd8 33. c4 Qb6 I have seen that if Ba5, Qxa6 34. cxb5 Kd7 To protest N and P 35. Ba5 Qb8 Only move 36. bxc6+ Resigns. Opponent played attack very well I thought. I was disappointed as he was graded lower than me. 1-0
