1. e4 c6 Aha, the Caro-Can't! I know a trap in this. I get my queen to e2 and then mate on d6 with a knight. I've just got to remember how to get to it. 2. Nc3 Gotta get that Knight out, 'cause it's the one that will mate him. 2... d5 I've got to let him take that pawn, and then retake with the Knight. I can't put my queen on e2 yet or he might smell a rat. 3. d4 dxe4 4. Nxe4 Bf5 I can't get to e2 yet, because he just wins the d-pawn. Must keep my knight. 5. Ng3 Bg6 It's going to be difficult to get my knight to d6 now. Maybe I can dislodge his bishop with the other knight? 6. Nf3 e6 That's torn it. I'm most unlikely to get my smothered mate now. Oh well, I suppose I'll have to try to play chess. Don't laugh. 7. Bd3 Be7 8. Bxg6 hxg6 9. Ne5 Bf6 I'm tempted to play Nxg6, but can't see any real advantage. 10. Nf3 Nh6 Me 12 mins - him 30 (he was late) 11. Be3 Nd7 I'm just developing now. No particular aim. 12. Qd3 Rc8 13. O-O-O Now I've got all the bits out, I can start crashing about. 13... Qb6 I've seen a brilliant move! Bash through the middle, and discover an attack on his queen as well! 14. d5 Whoops. I've just seen he can take my b-pawn. No problem, the king can run and my pawn can take one of his and then my Q and R cause havok, and his queen'll be offside. 14... Qxb2+ 15. Kd2 cxd5 Damn! I was expecting Bc3. I'm deep in the mire now. No attack left, and he's attcking me. 16. Bd4 That should settle him. I'm only 2 pawns down. 16... Bxd4 17. Nxd4 Ne5 18. Qb5+ Not much choice 18... Qxb5 19. Nxb5 Nc4+ 20. Ke2 a6 21. Nd4 O-O Must ry to get some counterplay. 22. Rb1 b5 23. Kd3 e5 24. Nb3 From now on, I'm just trying to find moves that don't lose immediately. He played very well, gradually restricting me more and more. 24... Ng4 25. Ke2 Na3 26. Rbc1 Rc3 27. h3 Nf6 28. Kd2 Rfc8 29. Na1 d4 30. f3 Nd5 31. Ne4 R3c6 32. Rhe1 f6 33. Re2 Nc3 34. Nxc3 Rxc3 35. Kd1 Nc4 36. Rf2 Nb2+ 37. Kd2 Nc4+ 38. Kd1 Ne3+ 39. Kd2 Kf7 40. Re2 Ke6 Loss agreed, to draw the match. My captain misheard me. I'd said I'd agree a loss if it meant we won the match. Never mind. I would have fought on. It ain't over till the king's in the box. 0-1
