Dudley League Division 2
Halesowen v Warley Quinbourne, 4 March 2003

Vic Ward again. Third time this season. I won the last one, so I must have a chance of breaking my losing run.

1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. d4 exd4 4. Nxd4 I think I've seen a new move. I know it goes against all the rules of position play, but I think I must win a pawn. After the game, Stewart Fishburne told me it's a known line. I was very disappointed. I thought I'd invented another new opening. 4... Qh4 5. Qd3 Nf6 6. Nc3 Bb4 7. Ndb5 I didn't see that. I have a number of options here. What about N x e4 and then if he goes Nxc7, I move my king, and there is a mate on f2 and his Knight is en prise? But I don't like the pin on my king after Qe2, so protect first and I can still do it later. 7... Ba5 8. g3 Qxe4+ 9. Qxe4+ Nxe4 10. Bd2 Nxd2 11. Kxd2 My opponent seems to have lost interest. He's spending more and more time away from the board. Maybe he's one of these guys who loses interest after the queen has gone? File this away for future reference. 11... a6 12. Na3 I think I'm clearly better, but can't see a way to force an immediate win, so work at development. Yes, I know you're supposed to develop before you attack, but it's worked this time hasn't it? 12... O-O 13. Nc4 He's going to have my bishop anyway, so screw him up as much as possible. 13... Bxc3+ 14. Kxc3 d5 This is part of a manouevre to nullify his fianchettoed bishop, which he hasn't got yet. 15. Na3 Be6 16. Kd2 Ne7 17. c3 c6 18. Nc2 Not sure best place for QR, so do this first. I think I've lost a bit of initiative by worrying about his bishop too much. 18... Rfe8 19. Nd4 Nf5 20. Nxe6 Rxe6 21. Bh3 I missed that. I could protect the N with the rook, but I like it on the open file, and don't care about doubled pawns. 21... g6 22. Rhe1 Rae8 23. Bxf5 gxf5 24. Re3 This is beginning to look drawish, but I need a win, so play on for a bit. 24... Kg7 25. Rae1 Kf6 26. h4 Rg8 27. f4 h5 28. Kd3 He's after my q-side pawns, but I see a tactic. 28... Rxg3 He resigned. A bit premature perhaps, but after Rxg3 Rxe1, Rg5 Rf1 he loses. After the game, we played through to see if 28 Rxe6 was better for him, but I still won the endgame. 0-1
