Halesowen Chess Club Knockout Tournament 2010/2011 Season

Competition Rules - Revised 22/5/10

The knockout tournament will run throughout the summer of 2010, finishing by the end of August 2010.

TOURNAMENTThe tournament will be a knockout consisting of 4 rounds including the final. The first round must be completed on or before 29 June, the 2nd round on or before 20 July, Semi-Finals on or before 10 August, and the final on or before 31 August.
COLOURSPlayers will draw lots for colours. If several games are played between two players in a particular round, colours will alternate.
CLOCKSThe lower graded player shall start with 75 minutes playing time, and the higher graded player will lose one minute for each 2 points difference in the grades. For this purpose, ungraded players will have a notional grade of 75. The higher graded player must have a minimum of 30 minutes on his or her clock.
DRAWSIn the unlikely event of a draw, players may decide to replay at the time limits given above, or to play a 5 or 10 minute game with no time handicap.
DEFAULTSIf a game has not been played by the date for the end of a round, both players default. If one or more games have been played but no winner has emerged, players may opt to draw lots to decide who goes into the next round. The exception to this rule is the Final. In this case, the trophy will be shared. If a match has been played, but the winner then drops out of the tournament the players may agree between themselves that the loser goes forward to the next round.
There are now the following exceptions to the ‘double default’ rule.
1. If one player dies during the tournament, his opponent from the previous round shall be deemed to have won the match, whatever the actual result.
2. If a match is not played by the given date, the players may agree between them which of them defaults.
The tournament controller is not interested in arbitrating in disputes such as Player A’s grandmother died, but Player B went on holiday, and therefore a game was not played by the date given, and whose fault is it.
Any disputes arising should be referred to the tournament controller, or in his absence, either the club secretary or chairman.
